At Leda Primary School we follow a range of Whole School Approaches to the teaching of English.
Talk for WritingĀ Ā
Talk for Writing is a well-researched approach for teaching writing. Students begin the unit by completing a pre-assessment called a Cold Task. Students are then introduced to a modelled text which they practice reading and orally presenting with their peers. Students are then taught the necessary skills to write a given text type and are scaffolded through the writing process. They then write independent texts based on what they have been taught before completing a final assessment. This program is implemented from Kindergarten to Year 6.
Shared ReadingĀ
Shared Reading is a supportive, interactive reading procedure where students are read to by the classroom teacher. Shared reading allows for the teaching of comprehension strategies and grammar and punctuation skills. Teachers model āthink aloudsā to demonstrate the invisible processes that occur when reading and comprehending a text. This process provides students with the necessary strategies to independently read and comprehend texts.
Guided ReadingĀ
Guided reading is a researched based approach to reading. A small group of students, at similar reading levels, work closely with the teacher during a Guided Reading lesson. The teacher provides teaching across the lesson to support students to build their knowledge of reading strategies. During this time other students participate in rotational based activities to further develop their skills and concepts in English.
Phonics and SpellingĀ
A range of engaging and hands on activities are used to introduce and practice phonics and spelling concepts. These include:
- Spelling Warm Ups
- Heggerty Oral Language program K – 3
- Letters and Sounds K-1
- Sound Waves 2 – 6
